Baby Attacked By Ball Python

A 15 month old baby was attacked by a ball python while taking a walk in the park with his mother. The snake wrapped around the boys leg and bit him. 2 maintenance workers beat the 4' snake with a shovel in fear that it might have eaten the child, HA! Upon inspection of the animal it was malnourished and dehydrated and will be taken care of at a local pet store until it dies from the shovel wounds :(

15 foot snake found in suburban Florida

A 15 foot reticulated python was found in a pool in southern Florida yesterday, there is no way that that animal grew that big in the wild of Florida, that means that someone lost thousands of dollars taking care of that animal and let it go, or lost it.

Excuse Me Sir But Can You Please Empty Your Pockets?

Indian Star Tortoises, despite being illegal to export, are still very common in West Asian And Southern European pet stores. Because the governments are not allowed to impound when they find the animals in pet stores, and smugglers being as sneaky as they are, it is hard for an illegal tortoise exporting rings to be uncovered.

More than anticipated

A golfer in Florida almost lost his arm yesterday when he lost his ball in a pond and went to retrieve it. He was bitten by an alligator and was brought to a hospital after almost losing his life. I wonder if he got the ball back. He had no serious injuries and the alligator was captured.

Retic in Wales

A large reticulated python was found in southern Wales on monday, very far from it's natural east asian habitat. Could you imagine how much effort would have to go into taking care of a snake until it is 15 ft. long. Obviously someone didn't try to let the animal go, that would be thousands of dollars down the drain. Hope it goes to a good home.

Albino Gator On Vacation in Tennasee

The Knoxville Zoo has just received a new albino alligator for their exhibits. The alligator, named Dinah, is being loaned to the zoo until September when she will be returned to the farm that she lives at. Albino alligators are extremely rare because of their tendency to stick out in their natural surroundings, making a good target for birds, fish, and larger gators.

There's an Alligator In The Middle Of The Road, what do you do?

A traffic jam in San Antonio was caused by a nearly 8 foot long american alligator basking in the middle of the road. The reptile only moved after it had been lassoed around the mouth and tore a bumper off of a polica cruser. Find the article here. Click here to see what it looks like when an alligator tears a bumper off of a car.

An American alligator was spotted by campus security at Trinity Western University. They saw the 4-foot long reptile in a ravine at the school, they have laid traps with help from a local reptile rescue, ReptileRefuge, and are hoping to catch the animal in the next few days before someone gets hurt. Here it is!

Not all amphibians screwed!

It's common for people to talk about the death of amphibians when discussing global warming and the O-zone layer. But not all amphibians are doomed, cane toads are doing a damn good job at keeping there numbers up, especially in Australia (oops! let that slip!). And atleast two species of poison arrow frog are actually avoiding high concentrations of UV-B light (The actual problem is with UV-C, but you can't expect journalists to be scientists). The full article is here.

Croc's Get It On!!!

A large male Gharial named Jantan was re-located in order to breed between zoos. Jantan belongs to an endangered species from South-East Asia. With only around 2,000 animals left in the wild it's good to see people helping them out.

Polotics and Iguanas

Former Cayman Island Governor, John Owen has been helping the Blue Iguana Recovery Program to raise money to re-populate the islands with blue iguanas. Owen has helped to raise over $60,000. In 1995 there were no blue iguanas of breeding age left on the islands, today there are more than 1000 with the population growing rapidly, thanks to BIRP and people like Governor Owen. It's all here.

Over 100 Reptiles stolen from pet shop

Over 100 rare and expensive reptiles were stolen from a pet shop in Britain. The robbers got 57 tortoises and chameleons, which alone is like crazy moolah, the least expensive tortoise i've seen was 60$. 60*57=3420, and that's just if they were cheap animals. People piss me off.

Missouri saves turtles

The Missouri Department of Conservation has given some publicity to the problems created when Box Turtles are killed by motorists, it's always good for the state to do something about problems instead of herp groups. It's easier to listen to the government than it is to listen to "Those kids who you see in Wal-Mart buying Rubber-maids with no intention of storing sweaters". See it all.

True Vacation Land

The Staten Island Zoo just opened a new reptile wing. The exhibits include over 120 different species of reptile and an amazing 2-story alligator pool, and classrooms (the only summer school I would ever want to be in). There are over 40 different environments on display and each will have specific temperature and humidity settings, while still saving 20% of the projected energy baseline. Most of the lighting is provided by windows and sun-roofs and the the borders and work on the display cases make for an efficient and environmentally minded experience. Maine can hand the title of "Vacation Land" to the Staten Island Zoo 'cuz it sure as hell sounds a lot better than moose & lobster. See the original article here.

Legislature in Florida Make Moves to Regulate Large Reptiles

The state of Florida Legislature is charging owners of large invasive reptiles 100$, requiring the animal to have an implanted radio microchip, and the owners to have inspections of the animal's habitat, this is a move to prevent more of the problems with invasive reptiles that has been seen in Florida in the past few years. This decision by the legislature will hopefully slow down the introductions of invasive species into the Everglades.

Stealing Snakes?

Reptile keepers need to be on the lookout when selling expensive animals. Recently reptile keepers in Australia have been selling their animals in parking lots to make sure that no one knows where to steal their scaly critters. Some breeders have even installed extra security systems in their homes to protect their high-priced merchandise. Find the whole story here!
